Care Tips: How to enjoy your flowers longer
seasonal flowers that require specific care to bloom optimally. Here are the most important tips to enjoy your bouquet for as long as possible:
Preparing the vase
-
Clean vase: Use a glass vase that has been thoroughly cleaned with hot water and a drop of bleach to kill bacteria.
-
Lukewarm water: Fill the vase with lukewarm to hand-warm water; peonies do not like ice-cold water.
-
Flower food: Add the provided food to the water. This gives the flowers energy and inhibits bacterial growth.
Treating the peonies
-
Cut at an angle: Cut the stems at an angle of approximately 1 to 2 cm with a sharp, clean knife. Avoid dull scissors, as this can crush the vessels in the stem.
-
Clear the leaves: Ensure that no leaves are hanging in the water, as decaying leaves contaminate the water and shorten the lifespan.
-
Help with opening: Are the buds not opening properly? This is often due to a natural sugar layer on the bud. You can gently spray the buds with some lukewarm water or wipe them with a damp cloth to help them bloom.
The best spot in the house
-
No direct sunlight: Place the bouquet in a bright spot, but avoid direct sunlight which causes the flowers to wither too quickly.
-
Away from fruit: Keep peonies away from the fruit bowl; the ethylene gas from ripening fruit makes the flowers finish blooming faster.
-
Cool and draft-free: Do not place the vase in a draft or directly above a heater.
Daily maintenance
-
Refill water: Peonies drink a lot, especially when they are fully open. Check the water level daily and refill if necessary.
-
Change water: Change the water completely if it starts to become cloudy and then cut a small piece off the stems at an angle again.
