Care tips: How to keep your Kentia Palm in top shape
Although the Kentia Palm is known as one of the easiest palms, it appreciates a little attention:
-
Light: It is not demanding. A spot in partial shade is ideal. Avoid direct afternoon sun, as it can burn the leaves. It can even survive in darker spots, though it will grow more slowly there.
-
Watering: Keep the potting soil slightly moist in spring and summer, but not soaking wet. In winter, allow the soil to dry out a bit more between waterings. Note: Brown leaf tips often indicate too much water or air that is too dry.
-
Misting: Originally from Lord Howe Island, this palm loves a humid environment. Mist the leaves regularly with a spray bottle; this prevents brown tips and keeps the foliage shiny and dust-free.
-
Temperature: It feels most comfortable at normal room temperature (18-23°C). Ensure it does not get colder than 12°C at night.
-
Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), provide palm fertilizer once a month to keep its leaves deep green.
Florist’s tip: Is a bottom leaf turning brown or unsightly? This is part of the plant’s natural process. You can simply cut this leaf off at the base of the trunk, so energy goes back to the new, fresh fronds!
